About BMI
The Body Mass Index is a calculation used to categorize a person as underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese based on the relationship of tissue mass and height.
That categorization is the subject of somewhat controversial about where on the BMI scale the dividing lines between categories should be placed.
Usual BMI ranges are underweight: under 18.5 kg/m2, normal weight: 18.5 to 25, overweight: 25 to 30, obese: over 30.
However, the BMI does not account for many factors that may bias the calculation. For example, a body building athlete with a large weight may be classified as overweight or even obese, even if it does not have much fat tissue.
BMI Calculation
The formula for BMI is:
BMI = Weight / Height^2
Weight should be expressed in Kg and Height in meters. You can use our calculator in imperial units that the conversion to metric units is taken into account.
